Step 1
What does your ideal week actually look like?
“Stay involved” can mean client introductions, ongoing advisory work, business development, management or the occasional consultation. Each takes a different amount of time and can carry different requirements. Spell out the meetings, response times, travel and decisions that come with each one.
If you keep the same responsibilities, you have sold the practice without buying back your time.
So begin with the responsibilities you want to stop. If the successor expects you to keep them, the proposal may give you liquidity without giving you the time you wanted.
Step 2
Four ways to stay involved.
| Arrangement to explore | What to define | What to examine closely |
|---|---|---|
| Introductions, then departure | Joint meetings, handoff duties and an end date | Whether later payments depend on you continuing to work |
| Ongoing advisory employment | Client responsibilities, pay, supervision and hours | Who controls your workload, and how the role can end |
| Gradual ownership transfer | Ownership changes, decision rights, funding and timetable | What happens if the later transfer never happens |
| Selected relationships | Which households, service duties and economics are included | Whether the business you keep can still support your goals |
These are discussion categories, not arrangements Morrowgate has committed to provide. Terms, eligibility, permitted activity, and approvals must be established for the specific situation.
Step 3
Separate the purchase from the job.
A stay-on deal usually mixes three kinds of money. Put each on its own line.
Paid for ownership or relationships.
Paid for the work you keep doing.
Paid only if future results are met.
Then find out which of those payments could change if your employment ends.
Warning signs in a stay-on deal
- Purchase payments that quietly depend on you staying employed.
- No end date for your role, or one the buyer alone controls.
- “Flexibility” promised in conversation but missing from the agreement.
- No clear answer on who decides when you and the successor disagree.
Have your advisers review restrictions, termination terms, disability and death provisions, reporting and how disputes get resolved. A reassuring summary is no substitute for understanding the agreement.
Your role brief
Write the job description before they do.

Step 4
Stress-test it with one bad week.
An urgent client problem lands on a day you planned to be away. Who answers? Who decides? If everyone still assumes you will step in, the handoff is not finished.
Also talk through what happens if the successor loses a key employee, your health changes, or the transition needs more time. Written decision rights and a clear escalation path make those conversations far more useful than a general promise of flexibility.
Questions about staying involved
Can I keep receiving payments after retiring?
The answer depends on the business model and agreement. Brokerage continuing-commission arrangements have specific conditions; do not assume those arrangements apply to an advisory-practice sale. Obtain firm and professional guidance before relying on a proposed payment stream.
Can I continue giving clients advice after leaving?
Permitted activity depends on your registration, affiliation, role, agreements, and applicable requirements. Define that boundary before the transition and communicate it clearly.
What if I want to leave sooner?
Ask how an earlier departure affects duties, compensation, and purchase payments. Have the consequences documented before you agree.
